AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2022 indoor campaign capturing 14 victories as part of 25 overall top-three performances at the Akron Quad on Friday, Jan. 14 at the Stile Athletics Field House.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Freshman Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) registered a career-best mark of 19-3.25 (5.87m) to finish first in the women's long jump. She later was a double-winner posting the fifth-best mark in indoor program history, 40-3.50 (12.28m) to top the field in the women's triple jump.
• Junior Amya Clarke (Christ Church, St. Kitts and Nevis) recorded a career-best times of 7.56 and 24.78, respectively, to win the women's 60- and 200-meter races.
• Senior Hannah Long (Pacific, Mo.) captured the women's mile running a career-best time of 4:47.33.
• On the strength of career-best times of 47.10 and 48.24, redshirt sophomore Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) took the top-two finishes in the men's 400 meters.
• Sophomore Haruki Sakai (Katori, Japan), senior Jayce Shaffer (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and redshirt sophomore Avalonn Harper (Wooster, Ohio) claimed the top-three finishes in the men's long jump registering marks of 23-3.25 (7.09m), 23-0.50 (7.02m) 22-3.75 (6.80m).
• Freshman Taylor Shriver (Waynesburg, Pa.) won the women's pole vault with a career-best clearance of 13-6.25 (4.12m), while freshmen Abby Knouff (Tallmadge, Ohio) and Brynn Rychlik (Marysville, Ohio) finished second and third besting the bar at 13-2.25 (4.02m) and 12-2.50 (3.72m), respectively.
• Sophomore Blake Lucius (Crestline, Ohio) edged the field in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:52.23.
• Junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) eclipsed 6-10.75 (2.10m) to win the men's high jump.
• Sophomore Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) edged the field in the women's 800 meters crossing the line in 2:12.11.
• Freshman Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) won the men's pole vault eclipsing 15-11.75 (4.87m).
• Freshman Beth Arentz (Cronulla, Australia) garnered the victory in the women's 3,000 meters in a time of 9:49.79.
• Akron's top 4x400 relay team capped the night winning the event in 3:15.78.
UP NEXT
The Zips return to action on Jan. 21 as Akron battles rival Kent State in the annual dual meet between the two programs, this year at the Kent State Field House.
