Akron Set to Battle Rival Kent State in Annual Dual Meet

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams continue their 2022 indoor campaign this weekend as the Zips travel to face rival Kent State in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 21.

The 28-event meet with the Golden Flashes will commence with the men's long jump and triple jump beginning at 5 p.m., before the women's mile kicks off action on the track at 6:30 p.m.

The event will be scored as a dual meet with 5-3-2-1 points being awarded for individual events with two scores per team, while relays will be scored with the winner being awarded five points and the runner-up three points.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2021 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 1, 2021 as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.

Akron ranked fifth nationally in the men's triple jump and among the top 20 in six different events.

The Zips also rated seventh in the men's long jump, ninth in the men's pole vault, 11th in the men's weight throw, 14th in the women's long jump and 19th in the women's 800 meters.

The Akron men and women ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.

ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2022 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has a pair of student-athletes currently ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2022 indoor campaign, including, redshirt sophomore Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio), who is seventh in the nation in the men's 400 meters (47.10).

Also rated among the top-25 is freshman Taylor Shriver (Waynesburg, Pa.) (20th in the women's pole vault – 13-6.25 (4.12).

CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have registered a pair of overall top-five performances in program history during the 2022 indoor campaign.

Sanders posted the fifth-best time in indoor program history in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 47.10 to win the event at the Akron Dual on Jan. 14.

Freshman Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) registered the fifth-best mark in indoor program history, 40-3.50 (12.28m) to top the field in the women's triple jump at the Akron Quad on Jan. 14.

A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2022 indoor campaign capturing 14 victories as part of 25 overall top-three performances at the Akron Quad on Jan. 14 at the Stile Athletics Field House.

A YEAR AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams garnered 16 victories as part of 36 overall top-three performances as the Zips captured the Akron Triangle at the Stile Athletics Field House on Jan. 22, 2021.

The Zips bested the field in the men's competition as Akron registered 118.50 points to edge Kent State (105.50) and Buffalo (55). In the women's field, the Zips led the field with 111 points, followed by Kent State (109) and Buffalo (64).
