KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Akron Zips dropped a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on the road against Western Michigan by scores of 13-2 and 7-6 on Saturday at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.
Â
In the first game, Western Michigan plated three runs by the end of the second inning and Akron crossed the plate in the top of the third inning with one run on four hits. Bradley Goulet opened the inning with a single to centerfield and Roy Thurman followed with a single to right field. With two on base and two outs, Zac Granger and Connor Regan delivered singles as Granger used right field to load the bases and Regan collected the RBI with a hit to the left side. Akron left three on base.
Â
The Broncos answered with a run in the bottom half of the third inning and used the bottom of the fourth to plate five runs for a 9-1 advantage. Akron added a run in the fifth, but the Broncos responded with four more in the sixth en route to the 13-2 decision. Justin Barr opened the fifth inning with a base on balls, and Regan blasted an RBI double to centerfield, scoring Barr.
Â
In the second game, Akron scored six runs after a four-run sixth inning allowed the Zips to take a 6-4 lead into the final inning of play. The Zips plated the first two runs in the first and third innings as Thurman opened the game with a triple to right center field. Barr recorded the RBI on a groundout to the shortstop, and he sent an RBI single to first bast to score Bryant Shellenbarger in the top of the third.
Â
Trailing 4-2, Akron pounded out five hits to score for runs in the sixth inning fueled by a lead-off double by Regan. He eventually scored on a wild pitch, and back-to-back doubles from Cameron Tilly and Jerry Reinhart plated the Zips' second run of the inning. Reinhart collected the RBI before a Goulet single moved him to third, placing runners on the corners. A sacrifice flyout to left field by Shellenbarger moved Reinhart across the plate and Thurman followed with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Goulet.
Â
The Zips carried a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh but couldn't hold on as the Bronce scored three in the final inning for the 7-6 walk-off win.
Â
With the win, the Broncos moved to 6-11 overall and 6-5 in MAC play, while Akron fell to 9-10 overall and 3-8 in league play.
Â
The final game of the series is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 4 at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. Fans can follow the action via live stats on GoZips.com or by WMU Radio broadcast.
