KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan Broncos claimed the opening game of the weekend series with a one-hit, shut-out performance by starting pitcher Brandon Petersen as the Broncos plated 10 runs on Friday.

Petersen nearly faced the minimum number of batters and maintained a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Petersen faced 22 batters in 7.0 innings of work, allowing two baserunners on one hit and one walk with 12 strikeouts.

Zips' junior Roy Thurman (Indianapolis, Ind.) opened the game with a leadoff walk and junior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) recorded Akron's lone hit on a single to left field. Akron (9-8, 3-6 MAC) starting pitcher junior Conor Steinbaugh (Georgetown, Ill.) allowed eight hits and four runs in three innings of work and received the loss. He struck out two batters and walked none as the Broncos plated runs in the first and third innings.

Western Michigan (4-11, 4-5 MAC) added four runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth and seventh for the win.
