AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's softball team was bested in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 24 at Lee R. Jackson Field as Saint Francis (15-6) registered 4-2 and 10-3 triumphs past the Zips (3-15).

In the opener, the Red Flash scored a pair of runs in the second inning and a single tally in the top of the third inning to assume a 3-0 lead.

Akron responded with a two-run frame in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut its deficit to 3-2. Redshirt freshman LF Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) started the rally collecting a one-out single. Senior SS Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) followed with a two-out single to right-center field which advanced Stevens to third base, while Malik took second base on the throw. With a pair of runners in scoring position, redshirt freshman 2B Maggie Sons (Dalzell, Ill.) knocked a two-RBI, two-out single to plate Stevens and Malik.

Saint Francis added an insurance tally in the top of the sixth inning to account for the 4-2 final.

Stevens finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Sons added a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI.

In the nightcap, the Red Flash jumped out to a 5-0 lead in their first at-bat batting around in the top of the first inning.

Saint Francis extended its advantage to 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning, before the Zips plated a single tally in the home half of the frame. Senior CF Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) garnered a two-out single through the right side and came across the dish on an RBI triple to right-center field off the bat of redshirt freshman LF Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio).

The Red Flash tacked on four runs in the top of the sixth inning before Akron scored a pair tallies in the bottom of the frame. Redshirt freshman C Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) doubled to right center to open the inning. Redshirt freshman Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) pinch ran for DeVoe and scored on an RBI triple down the right-field line by Stevens. After an infield groundout, Mitchiner doubled to right field to plate Stevens.

Mitchiner finished the tilt 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Bryant went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Akron is slated to resume action with a four-game weekend series at Bowling Green, April 2-4, after its scheduled doubleheader with Marshall on Thursday, March 25 was canceled due to projected weather forecasts.
