Wednesday's game marks the fifth meeting in series history between the Zips and the Aces. Evansville owns a 4-0 all-time record against the Akron. The two teams have not played in almost four decades as the last meeting was during the 1982-83 season, the Aces won 76-68 at Evansville. In Akron's first Division I season (1980-81), Evansville defeated the Zips 71-51 at Evansville. The series began during the 1957-58 season in the DII NCAA Mideast Tournament hosted by Evansville, the Aces won 82-70. The two teams also met for the 1963-64 DII NCAA Championship at Evansville as the Aces won the DII title, 72-59.

Evansville wraps-up the Gulf Coast Showcase with a 2-5 overall mark after falling to Rice in three overtime periods (109-104) and Vermont (58-49). The Aces defeated IUPUI (60-40) and DePauw (69-58) and fell to Cincinnati (65-43), Belmont (81-43) and UCF (75-59).

The Second Round
The Akron Zips shooting woes continued in game two of the Gulf Coast Showcase as Appalachian State handed Akron a 57-45 setback on Tuesday afternoon at Hertz Arena.

Sophomore Enrique Freeman (Cleveland, Ohio) posted his third double-double of the season to lead Akron. Freeman recorded 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while shooting a team-best 70-percent from the floor (7-of-10). The Zips finished the game shooting just 30.5 percent from the field (18-of-59), including a 21.2 percent effort from deep (7-of-33) and only 2-of-7 from the charity stripe. Junior Bryan Trimble, Jr. (Kansas City, Mo.) added nine points and sophomore Mikal Dawson (Huntington, W.Va.) notched eight points.

Akron opened the game on a 10-5 run and held the lead at the 13:25 mark, but a 4:53 scoring drought allowed the Mountaineers to take a 18-10 advantage. The Zips cut the deficit in half with back-to-back paint points, a dunk by Freeman and a layin by graduate K.J. Walton (Indianapolis, Ind.), but App State responded with a pair of baskets. Akron used a 7-0 run to end the half and trail by only one point, 22-21 at intermission.

The Zips were able to cut the deficit to 10 points on Freeman spin move in the paint and an sophomore Ali Ali (Indianapolis, Ind.) triple from the left wing which made the score 49-39 with 2:03 left to play.

Michael Almonacy scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Mountaineers, while Donovan Gregory and Adrian Delph followed with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
