RICHMOND, Ky.– The Akron softball team closed out the early season tournament portion of its 2020 schedule falling to UIC and Dayton on day two of the Eastern Kentucky Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

After suffering a 16-1 decision to Illinois-Chicago to begin the morning, The Zips went toe-to-toe against Dayton in the final contest but ultimately dropped a 2-1 result to the Flyers.

The Zips offense against the Flames came in the top of the fourth inning on two hits, a walk, and one run. With two outs, senior Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) walked, sophomore Morgan Cadmus (Tecumseh, Mich.) singled down the third base line, and sophomore Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) poked a RBI single into right field scoring Malik from second base.

Game two was decided by the long ball late in the game after a pitching duel between Akron's Petrof and Dayton's Jessica Weaver.

In the first five innings of the game, only a combined six hits were recorded in the contest.

Dayton struck pay dirt first in the bottom of the sixth inning off a two-run home run to hand the Flyers a 2-0 advantage heading into the Zips final at-bats.

Akron's Bailey Drapola (Brookfield, Ohio) led off for the Zips and on a 1-2 pitch, connected the ball to the barrel of the bat and notched her fourth home run of the season. Ultimately, that is all the Zips would manage as the next three UA batters went down in order to end the contest.

After a two-week period without softball, the Akron softball team dives right into Mid-American Conference play as the Zips host Central Michigan in a twinbill on Saturday, March 21, beginning at 1 p.m.
