Akron Lacrosse Falls Just Short to St. Bonaventure

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron women's lacrosse continues to show an improved effort each time out, however its efforts fell just short Saturday afternoon, as it fell to St. Bonaventure, 14-10.Â
Â
With the loss, Akron falls to 0-6 while St. Bonaventure improves to 5-1.Â

Leading the offensive attack for the Zips was freshman Abby Schaefer (Beaver Falls, Pa.) who scored three goals on all three shots she took, good for a hat-trick. Junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.) and freshman Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) added two goals each.Â

Kiefer also did well on the defensive side of the ball, causing a team-high two turnovers while adding three ground balls. Freshman Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) led the team in ground balls with six.Â
Â
Freshman Falon Costigan (Huntersville, N.C.) got the start in goal for the Zips, gathering eight saves on 19 shots, good for a .421 save percentage. Fellow freshman goalkeeper Abby Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa.) came in with just under 26 remaining in the second half and compiled five saves on eight shots (.625 %).

The Zips got off to a hot start as Kiefer netted the first goal of the game at the 27:18 mark on a man-up free-position shot after a foul by the Bonnies. Less than two minutes later, the Zips increased the lead to two, thanks to Schaefer's first goal of the afternoon.Â

The Bonnies responded with two goals of their own in the next two minutes to tie the game at 2.Â

Less than 40 seconds after St. Bonaventure tied the game, Schaefer netter her second goal of the game to reclaim the lead for Akron, 3-2. Freshman Kaitlyn Morris (West Seneca, N.Y.) found the back of the net at the 21:09 mark to give Akron its second two-goal lead of the afternoon, 4-2.Â

The Bonnies would hold the Zips scoreless while scoring three goals of their own over the next 11 minutes to claim a 5-4 lead over the Zips.

Sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind.) ended the scoring drought for Akron, as her lone goal of the game tied the game at 5 with just over three minutes remaining.

St. Bonaventure scored two goals in the final two minutes to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.Â
Â
The Bonnies continued to tack on goals in the second half, scoring five girls in the opening eight minutes while holding the Zips scoreless in that span.Â

The Zips found the back of the net for the first time in the second half thanks to a free-position goal by Kiefer, her second of the game. Dennison followed that up with a goal of her own, to cut the score to 12-7 in favor of the Bonnies.Â

After a goal by St. Bonaventure, the Zips went on a 3-0 scoring run, thanks to goals by Schaefer (giving her the hat-trick), freshman Gianna Buzzelli (Gibsonia, Pa.), and Dennison, respectively.

The Bonnies would score once more, and go on to win the game.Â

The Zips return to action on Wednesday, March 11, as they will head to Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on Duquesne at 4 p.m.
