HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The University of Akron baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Marshall on Saturday at the Kennedy Center.

In game one, Marshall captured a 3-1 victory. The Thundering Herd (3-9-1 overall) won 2-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Marshall scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning.

Akron tied the game in the top of the fourth as junior CF Brenton Phillips (Albany, Ga.) homered to left field. It marked Akron's first home run this spring.

In the bottom of the fourth, Marshall scored two runs.

The Zips had five hits on the day compared to Marshall's two. Akron had two fielding errors, while Marshall had one.

In his first start for the Zips, junior RHP Jackson Hickert (Hudson, Ohio) went the distance, throwing all eight innings. He struck out six and walked four. Wade Martin (1-3 overall) recorded his first win on the mound for Marshall. He hurled 6.2 innings, fanning 11 batters and walking one.

In game two, Akron (0-10 overall) jumped on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second inning. With two outs, junior 3B Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) singled to centerfield, scoring junior RF Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio), who reached on a single.

Marshall tied the game in the bottom of the second and scored the winning run in the fifth.

The Zips registered four hits compared to Marshall's nine. Both teams had one fielding error.

Junior righty Quinton Kujawa (Mount Vernon, Ill.) took the loss (0-3 overall), hurling 6.0 innings. He struck out five and walked two. Brady Choban (1-2 overall) earned his first win for MU. He threw 6.0 innings, fanning six.

The teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, March 8, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Kennedy Center.
