Akron Women’s Lacrosse Drops 14-7 Decision to Butler

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron women's lacrosse put forth a strong effort, however fell short to Butler Sunday evening at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field, 14-7.
With the loss, Akron falls to 0-5, while Butler improves to 4-1. ]
"I believe the girls are going to stack on this one, and of course we want to win and we're going to win... We played just played our hearts out and it was proven. They're just going to keep building on it, I'm sure of it" said head coach Christy Mitchell.
Leading the offensive attack for the Zips were freshmen Kaitlyn Morris (West Seneca, N.Y.), Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.), and Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) who each had two goals. Freshman Sarah Pattison (Cincinnati, Ohio) also contributed with one goal, her first of the season.
Freshman Gianna Buzzelli (Gibsonia, Pa.) had another strong game defensively for the Zips, leading the Zips in caused turnovers with four, while tying with Morris for the most ground balls with three. Freshman Abby Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa.) earned the start in goal, grabbing 12 saves on 26 shots (46.2%).
Butler was able to strike first at the 25:58 mark of the first half and would hold that lead for roughly seven minutes until Morris found the back of the net to tie the game at one.
After two more Butler goals put them up 3-1, Morris netted her second goal of the game on a free-position shot at the 14:09 mark, decreasing the deficit to 3-2. The Bulldogs would later propelled themselves ahead, 5-2, until back-to-back goals by Kunttu and Kiefer put Akron down by one.
Pattison scored her first goal of the season at the 5:02 mark of the first half, as the Zips trailed 7-5 heading into halftime.
Butler found the back of the net first in the second half and held the Zips scoreless until the 15:57 mark, when Kiefer scored her second goal of the game, bringing Akron within two, 8-6.
The Bulldogs began to run away with the game, scoring six unanswered goals until the 3:46 mark in the second half, when Kunttu netted her second goal of the game. The score would hold for the remainder of the game.
The Zips return to InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field on Saturday, March 7, as they will host St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m.
