BEAUMONT, Texas — The University of Akron baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to Lamar on Saturday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

For the third consecutive game, the Zips (0-7 overall) scored first. In the top of the second with two outs, junior 3B Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) singled to right field, scoring junior 1B Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia), who reached on a single to left field.

In the bottom of the second, Lamar (5-5 overall) scored four runs on four hits.

In the top of the third with two outs, UA DH Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) singled to right, scoring junior SS Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.), who reached on an error. The next batter– Tilly– singled to left field, scoring junior CF Brenton Phillips (Albany, Ga.), who was walked. After three innings, LU held a one-run lead, 4-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals added two runs to go ahead 6-3. LU added one run in the seventh and three runs in the eight for the final 10-3 score.

The Zips had five hits on the day compared to Lamar's 11. Both teams had one fielding error.

Junior righty Quinton Kujawa (Mount Vernon, Ill.) started the game for the Zips and took the loss (0-2). He threw 5.0 innings, fanning six and walking one. Freshman Grayson Phillips (Glendale, Ohio) pitched 2.0 innings, striking out one and walking two.

For Lamar, junior LHP Max Mize (1-0) threw 5.0 innings for his first victory. He stuck out seven and walked two.

"The players battled hard today," said first-year head coach Chris Sabo. "We just can't get over the hump. Hopefully the ball bounces better for us on Sunday."

Akron conclude series action at Lamar on Sunday, March 1, with a 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET) contest.
