BEAUMONT, Texas — The University of Akron baseball team concluded its series at Lamar with a 5-1 loss on Sunday morning at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Cardinals (6-5 overall) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring one run in each of the first four innings.

The Zips (0-8 overall) scored their lone run in the top of the fifth. With one out, junior 2B Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) sacrificed to left field, scoring junior RF Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio), who reached on a single to left field.

Lamar added a single run in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-1 advantage as the first batter 3B Anthony Quirion homered to left field.

The Zips had two hits on the day compared to Lamar's 10. Akron had one fielding error.

Freshman LHP Jacob Clark (Muncie, Ind.) started the game and took the loss (0-3 overall) for the Zips. He threw 3.0 innings, fanning two and walking one. Junior Jackson Hickert (Hudson, Ohio) finished the game. He pitched 5.0 innings, striking out six and walking three.

For Lamar, junior RHP Austin Faith (1-0) threw the first 4.2 innings. He stuck out two and walked two.

"Jackson Hickert came in relief for us today and did an outstanding job keeping us in the game," said first-year head coach Chris Sabo. "Unfortunately, our offense could not sustain an adequate attack. We look forward in getting back to Akron and playing at Marshall next weekend."

Akron continues road play next weekend. The Zips visit Marshall on March 6-8 for a four-game series. First pitch is Friday, March 6, at 6 p.m. at the Kennedy Center.
