Akron baseball continues road play this week. The Zips head South for a three-game series at Lamar.
Action begins on Friday, Feb. 28, with a 6 p.m. CT [7 p.m. ET] contest. Action continues on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. CT [3 p.m. ET] game. The final game is slated for Sunday, March 1, 10 a.m. CT [11 a.m. ET]. All games will be played at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont, Texas.

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Chris Sabo, Akron stands 0-5 overall after dropping a three-game series at undefeated Pepperdine, ranked No. 22 nationally this week. Returning to action after a four-year hiatus, the Akron roster features two seniors, 22 juniors, one sophomore, and eight freshmen.
Expected to start on the mound for the Zips this weekend are redshirt junior RHP Taed Heydinger (Bayfield, Colo.), junior RHP Quinton Kujawa (Mt. Vernon, Ill.), and freshman LHP Jacob Clark (Muncie, Ind.).
After five games, junior CF Brenton Phillips (Albany, Ga.) is the Zips' top hitter at .278. He has five hits, a double, and an RBI. Junior LF Austin Domer (Orrville, Ohio) follows at .222. He has two hits. Junior 2B Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) bats .176. He has two runs and three hits. On the mound, junior RHP Quinton Kujawa sports a 2.19 ERA in 12.1 innings. He's fanned nine batters and walked four in two games.
The Cardinals, under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Will Davis, stand 3-5 overall after a 4-2 loss to UTSA on Feb. 25.
Expected to start on the mound for Lamar this weekend are junior RHP Trevin Michael, junior RHP Zach Bravo, and junior RHP Austin Faith.
Sophomore SS Kelby Weyler is the Cardinals' top hitter in the early going. A starter in every game, he has a .407 batting average with 11 hits, three runs, two doubles, a triple, and five RBI. Junior RF Avery George follows, batting .393 with 11 hits, , three runs, a double, and five RBI. On the mound, junior RHP Trevin Michael sports a 1.38 ERA after pitching 13.0 innings. He has a team-best 16 strikeouts and two walks.
AKRON-LAMAR CONNECTIONS
Akron has two players from Texas on its roster– freshman 3B Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas | IMG Academy (Fla.) and junior RHP Brady Mehl (Southlake, Texas | Carroll HS).
Lamar has no players from Ohio.

Akron and Lamar are tied in series play, 2-2. In the teams' last meeting in the 2011 season opener, Akron split two games with the Cardinals, winning 2-1 and dropping a 1-0 decision at Mississippi State's Duty Noble Field.
In their first meeting in 2008, the teams split two games at Lamar. The Zips won game one, 10-8, and lost game two, 10-7.

LAST GAME
During its first road trip of the season, the University of Akron baseball team dropped a three-game series at undefeated Pepperdine on Feb. 21-23.
In game one, the Waves claimed a 12-1 win. Akron scored its lone run in the top of fifth as freshman 3B Kaito Hara singled down the right line, scoring junior 1B Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia), who reached on an error by the shortstop. Junior righty Taed Heydinger started the game for the Zips and took the loss (0-1). He threw 6.0 innings, fanning three and walking four.
In game two, the teams were scoreless through four innings. In the top of the fifth, Mother Nature interfered. Following a 40-minute lightning delay, the game was underway once again. However, Pepperdine pulled out a 4-0 shutout victory. In his first start on the mound, junior righty Quinton Kujawa threw 7.0 innings and took the loss (0-1) for the Zips. He struck out three and walked one.
In game three, Akron jumped on the scoreboard immediately. With two outs in the top of the first, junior CF Brenton Phillips doubled to left field. Junior DH Cameron Tilly then singled to left center, scoring Phillips. After three quick outs in the bottom of the first, UA held the advantage, 1-0, marking the Zips' first lead of the season. Pepperdine then scored seven runs for the 7-1 win. In his first start on the mound, freshman LHP Jacob Clark took the loss for Akron (0-2 overall). He pitched 3.2 innings, fanning one and walking two.
ZIPS QUICK HITS
Akron has 11 student-athletes on its roster from the state of Ohio.
Head coach Chris Sabo played third base for the Cincinnati Reds [1988-93, 1996-97].
Akron is one of two baseball teams that have been reinstated for the 2020 season. Boise State, which dropped baseball in 1980, also returns to the baseball diamond this spring.
The Zips are a non-scholarship team, the only one in the MAC.
