BEAUMONT, Texas — The University of Akron baseball team opened a three-game series at Lamar with an 8-3 loss on Friday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

For the second consecutive game, the Zips (0-6 overall) scored first. The first batter of the game, junior 2B Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) whacked a triple to left center field. Junior SS Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) then sacrificed on a fly out to right field, scoring Goulet.

The Cardinals (4-5 overall) went ahead in the bottom of the second with two runs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lamar added five runs. With bases loaded, LF Reese Durand homered to right field for the grand slam.

In the top of the sixth, Akron scored two runs. Goulet's bat was hot again as he doubled to left field. Barr grounded out to first base, scoring junior DH Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.), who reached on a walk. Junior CF Brenton Phillips (Albany, Ga.) then grounded out, scoring Goulet.

LU scored the game's final run in the seventh for the 8-3 victory.

The Zips had four hits on the day compared to Lamar's five. UA also had no fielding errors, while the Cardinals had one.

Junior righty Taed Heydinger (Bayfield, Colo.) started the game for the Zips and took the loss (0-2). He threw 4.0 innings, fanning one and walking three. Freshman Logan Bell (Lisbon, Ohio) pitched 3.0 innings, striking out three and walking two.

For Lamar, junior RHP Trevin Michael (2-0) threw a complete game. He stuck out nine and walked one.

"We played alright tonight at Lamar," said first-year head coach Chris Sabo. "We have to limit our walks and continue to improve our offensive approach in order for us to have a better chance at success."

Akron continues series action at Lamar on Saturday, Feb. 29, with a 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) contest.
