The Akron-Bowling Green Series
Tuesday's game marks the 67th meeting in series history between Akron and Bowling Green, and 15th meeting for a Groce coached squad. Akron holds an all-time 40-26 series advantage while Groce is 7-7 against BGSU and 4-1 at Akron. The Zips have won 29 of the last 32 games, including a 74-59 win this season. Both teams protected home court and split the 2019-20 series . Akron dropped the last season's series opener at the Stroh Center (73-69) and bounced back with a lopsided 91-67 triumph. Akron swept 2018-19 season's series with an 80-78 win at Rhodes Arena (1/13/18) and an 81-79 win at the Stroh Center (2/20/18). Both games came down to the final possession.
Â
In 2016-17, the two teams split the season series. The Zips opened Mid-American Conference play with an 89-84 win over BGSU at the JAR (1/3/17). BGSU picked up the win in the closing seconds at the Stroh Center, 66-65, snapping the Zips' 17-game winning streak against the Falcons. It was Akron's first loss to BGSU since March 1, 2009, a 50-46 loss at Rhodes Arena. Akron has won nine consecutive games at the JAR and 13-of-14 at the Stroh Center.
Â
In addition, Akron posted three wins in the 2015-16 season, including an 80-66 win during the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament. The Zips have met the Falcons four times in the MAC Tournament with the series being tied at two games apiece. In addition, the 2017 MAC opener was the third time in series history that Akron and Bowling Green have met to open the MAC schedule. Akron holds a 3-0 advantage in conference openers, posting a 53-51 win in 1992-93, 71-45 victory during the 2009-10 season, and an 89-84 win in 2016-17 – all at Rhodes Arena.
Â
The Last Meeting...
In a battle between the two of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference East Division, an amped-up Akron Zips defense grounded the visiting Bowling Green Falcons in a decisive 74-59 win that knotted the two rivals in the loss column in the division standings at James A. Rhodes Arena on Tuesday.
Â
Junior Loren Cristian Jackson led all scorers with 28 points, while senior Tyler Cheese contributed 17 in the win. In addition, the trio of senior Channel Banks senior Xeyrius Williams and junior Camron Reece had nine, eight and seven points, respectively. Williams led the Zips on the glass, posting his 13th double-digit rebounding performance with 10 boards.
Â
Akron kept the clamps on the Falcons all game long, clipping the wings of their normally potent offense to the tune of 35.8 percent shooting (24-of-67) and 24.0 percent shooting from 3-point range (6-of-25). The Zips also forced 10 turnovers and converted them in 11 points, fueling their offense in a game where defense ruled the day.
Â
Bowling Green made numerous runs throughout the second half, closing to within one at 45-44 midway through the half, but Akron shook off a series of calls by the officials that went in favor of the Falcons and uncorked a 14-4 run punctuated by a fast break 3-pointer from the right wing and a subsequent fast break jumper from the right elbow by Banks that elevated the Akron advantage to 59-48 with 7:51 remaining in the game.
Â
It was a different Bowling Green team than the one Akron was expecting to face just a few days earlier, as the all-time leading 3-pointer shooter in program history, Dylan Frye, left the Falcons over the weekend for person reasons. Despite his departure, the Falcons entered the game in first place in the MAC East, one and a half games ahead of the Zips. They left it tied with Akron in the loss column, although the Falcons have a one-game edge in the win column thanks to having played one more MAC game than Akron.
Â
The Zips delivered a consistent, even effort in the opening 20 minutes and because of it, took a 35-29 lead to the locker room at the half. Although their shooting was a bit below their season average - including 3-of-13 marksmanship from 3-point range - the Zips made up for it with hard-nosed defense that limited the Falcons to 37.1-percent shooting (13-of-15), including just 2-of-13 from beyond the arc.
Â
Compounding the impact of that effort, Akron outrebounded Bowling Green by four in the first 20 minutes and allowed the Falcons to get to the foul line for just two shots. Jackson, after Eastern Michigan made it a mission to take him out of the game offensively in the Zips' previous game, returned to form with 16 points in the first half. He made all of his team's 3-pointers in the half and also canned one more triple in the frame than the Falcons did as a team.
Â
Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden led Bowling Green with 18 points and 10 rebounds in defeat and redshirt junior guard Justin Turner added 12.
Â
Defending the JAR
Akron is 13-2 at James A. Rhodes Arena and had a 12-game home court winning streak snapped by Toledo and fell to Buffalo the next time out. The Zips only allow opponents to score 62.4 points per game at home on 37.8 percent shooting from the field (345-of-913) and 28.4 percent from deep (87-of-306). Akron averages +14.1 scoring margin and has allowed 936 total points in 15 games – 99 points was the most for the opposition at Rhodes Arena this season. In fact, Akron has held nine teams to 60 points or less, including five teams to 50 or less.
Â
Akron in the MAC
The Zips have posted a 56-35 mark (.615) in the last 91 games against the MAC East dating back to the start of the 2012 league schedule. Akron is 6-3 against the MAC East at the conference tournament during that stretch. Akron is 112-53 in the regular season against the West Division (.679), including winners of 55 of the last 72 regular-season games since divisional play began during the 1997-98 season. Akron is 65-17 (.793) at home in league play since the start of the 2011 MAC schedule. UA has seen a ton of success in league play since the start of the 2004-05 season, and is 180-89 overall (.669), including a 110-24 mark in MAC play at home (.821). The Zips' 180 wins are the most in the league during that stretch. The Zips have won 98 of their last 143 MAC games (.685).
Â
Creating Space
The Akron Zips are 12-3 in the last 15 games, including seven MAC wins by double figures. During that stretch, the Zips have outscored the opponents by a +9.0 margin (+135, 1,143-1,008). In the 14 league games, Akron holds a +9.2 margin (+129, 1,058-929). The Zips defeated UMass (+6), EMU (+24), WMU (+15), BSU (+15), NIU (+23), Miami (+21), Ohio (+2), EMU (+1), BGSU (+15), CMU (+13), WMU (+4) and Miami (+10). The Zips fell to Toledo (-10), Buffalo (-3) and Kent State (-1). The Zips own a +10.4 scoring margin in all games (+281, 2,049-1,768).
