Â
AKRON, Ohio – In its first home game, University of Akron women's lacrosse put forth a strong second-half effort; however, it was not enough as the Zips fell to Saint Francis (Pa.), 12-6.
Â
With the loss, the Zips fell to 0-4 on the season, while the Red Flash improved to 1-2.
Leading the way offensively for the Zips were junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.) and Abby Schaefer (Beaver Falls, Pa.) who each netted two goals for the Zips. Freshmen Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) and Kaitlyn Morris (West Seneca, N.Y.) both contributed one goal.Â
Â
Freshman Gianna Buzzelli (Gibsonia, Pa.) had a strong game defensively, causing 6 turnovers and grabbing seven ground balls for the Zips. Freshman Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) contributed four ground balls.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Abby Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa.) earned the start, grabbing a season/career-high 15 saves, while adding three ground balls.Â
Â
The Red Flash got on the board early, scoring less than two minutes into the game. The lead didn't hold for long, as Dennison's first goal of the game at the 26:28 mark tied the game at 1.
Â
The Zips were held scoreless for the remainder of the half and trailed, 7-1, heading into halftime.Â
Â
After an early goal by SFU to begin the second half, Akron was able to put a pair of goals on the board, thanks to a free-position goal by Morris and a well-placed shot by Schaefer who put the ball between the opposing goalie's legs to decrease the deficit, 8-3.Â
Â
After a couple of goals by the Red Flash increased their lead to 10-3, the Zips were able to respond with a pair of their own, thanks to Dennison and Schaefer finding the back of the net for both their second goals of the afternoon.Â
Â
Trailing by six, 11-5, Kunttu netted her fifth goal of the season roughly five minutes later to decrease the deficit to five.Â
Â
Saint Francis (Pa.) would score once more while holding the Zips scoreless for the remainder of the game.Â
Â
The Zips will be back in action on Sunday, March 1, as they host to Butler at 1 p.m. at InfoCision Stadium.
