CLINTON, S.C. – History was made for University of Akron's women's lacrosse as the Zips competed in their first ever regular-season competition against Presbyterian. The game was definitely one to remember as extra time was needed to figure out a winner. Unfortunately, the Zips would fall just one goal short, 10-9.
With the loss the Zips fall to 0-1, while Presbyterian improves to 2-1.
"Losing such a close game is always tough, but maybe a little harder when it's your first. We have a lot to be proud of. We have a lot to learn. We have an insane amount of potential. What we do with yesterday personally and as a team will have a direct result on the future. This is our first major test, and we need to be strong enough and smart enough to pass it and move ahead stronger" said head coach Christy Mitchell.
Freshman Kaitlyn Morris (Seneca, N.Y.) had the honor of scoring the first goal in program history at the 28:07mark in the first half.
Morris, along with sophomore Kaylee Riggins (Zionsville, Ind.) and freshman Abby McMullen (Medina, Ohio) led the Zips with two goals each. Junior Anna Dennison (Fallston, Md.) and freshmen Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) and Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) each added a goal a-piece.
Defensively, the Zips gathered 21 ground balls, highlighted by Riggins and Dennison who led the Zips with four each. In goal, freshman goalie Abby Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa.) finished the game with eight saves while adding three ground balls.
The Zips were able to come out the gate strong, as a goal by Kunttu at the 23:25 mark gave Akron an early 3-1 lead. The Blue Hose responded well by going on a 3-0 run that would give them the lead, 4-3. With just 33 seconds remaining in the first half, Morris was able to find the back of the net yet again to decrease the deficit to just one goal, 5-4, going into halftime.
The Zips got off to a hot start in the second half, as Riggins' second goal of the night tied the game up at 5. The game would hold steady for the next eight minutes until a goal by McMullen at the 19:07 mark put Akron ahead, 6-5.
Presbyterian would score shortly after to knot the game at 6, until another goal by McMullen once again gave the Zips the lead, 7-6. Momentum would begin to swing in Akron's favor, as it put up two more goals on the board thanks to a man-up goal by Dennison and another goal by Kiefer shortly after.
With eight minutes to go, the Zips held a 9-6 lead and seemed poised to earn its first victory in program history, but Presbyterian had other plans. The Blue Hose would score three goals in the next three minutes to tie the game at 9, and ultimately force an overtime period.
It wouldn't take long to settle the score as Presbyterian scored a goal 30 seconds into the overtime period, giving it the victory, 10-9.
The Zips will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 16, as they head to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on Gardner-Webb.
