Â
The Zips have won 14 of the last 25 meetings, including a 79-76 victory in the 2020 season finale at James A. Rhodes Arena (March 6). The two teams split as KSU claimed the earlier contest in the season 68-67 (Jan. 31) at the M.A.C Center. In 2019, Akron and Kent State split the series -- Zips won at home 72-53 (Feb. 8) and Kent State won 68-65 in Kent (March 8).
Â
The team from the east entered 2018-19 season winning 2-of-3 contests, including a split in the 2017-18 season series (W 78-68 in Kent), (L 67-65 in Akron) and the 2017 MAC Championship game (W 70-65 in Cleveland).
Â

Â
In addition, Akron won 2-of-3 games the following season (2012-13), winning on the road (71-67, Jan. 15) and falling at home (68-64, March 8) before winning its second consecutive semifinal matchup in the MAC Tournament (62-59, March 15). During that stretch, Akron won 5-of-6 games.

In addition, Akron and Kent State have played for the MAC Tournament championship three times. Kent State leads 2-1 in MAC title games. Kent State won the tournament in 2007-08 (74-55), Akron won the title in 2010-11 in overtime (66-65), and Kent State won the tournament in 2016-17 (70-65).
Scouting the Golden Flashes
Kent State enters the MAC season opener with a 3-1 overall record. The Flashes have won two straight games and nearly defeated Virginia, but fell 71-64 in overtime for the only loss of the season. Kent State defeated Northern Kentucky (92-73), Detroit Mercy (80-66) and Point Park (90-41).

Â
The Last Meeting
The Akron Zips secured the No. 1 seed for the 2020 Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 79-76 win over rival Kent State in what proved to be the last game of the 2019-20 campaign.
Â
Akron had four players score in double figures, and needed every bit to win the intense a rivalry game. Xeyrius Williams had another monster double-double for the Zips, leading all scorers with 22 points and all rebounders with 12 rebounds – it marks his 12th double-double of the season. Loren Cristian Jackson, Channel Banks, Tyler Cheese also reached double figures with 16, 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
It was Jackson's two free throws with 10.5 seconds left that put Akron ahead 77-74. A foul on the ensuing possession sent Kent State freshman guard Giovanni Santiago to the line, where he hit both charity tosses before two more free throws by Banks with 3.7 seconds left carved out the final margin of victory for the Zips. Kent State missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Â
The clutch moments came fast and furious down the stretch, from Cheese's 3-pointer with 2:21 remaining to numerous counterpunches by Kent State to tie the game after Akron edged ahead. However, it was the frequent whistles by the officials that had as big an impact on the game, with the Zips scoring six key points in the closing minutes from the line and Kent State (19-12, 9-9 MAC) notched two of its own after a foul call on Jackson with 30.2 seconds left, following the guard's layup to put his team ahead by four, 73-69, with 36.9 seconds left.
Â
The dramatic finale came after Kent State managed to edge ahead early in the second half using a 6-0 run, but the game remained close. The first half was a similarly back-and-forth affair that saw the two rivals trade leads, big shots, defensive stands and game-turning plays.
Â
Neither team could build a lead bigger than six points in the first half and the arch rivals were nearly even in multiple statistical categories, including rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots, all of which saw the Zips and Flashes within two of each other.
