Akron Women’s Basketball Unveils Talented Three-Member 2021 Signing Class

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball squad under the leadership of third-year head coach Melissa Jackson, has announced a talented three-member class for the early-signing period for the class of 2021.
Donning the Akron uniform next season will be Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), Abby Carter (Geneva, Ohio/Eastlake North) and Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind./Bishop Chatard).
"This is a great day for our program and the future of Akron Women's Basketball," Jackson commented. "This class is talented. All three are exceptional young women that excel both on and off the court. Their high character, work ethic and overall skill level will be great additions to our Zip Family. I want to thank my staff led by our associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, Colleen Day, for the relationships they built with these three student-athletes and their spot-on evaluations."
REAGAN BASS
A forward from Strongsville, Ohio, Bass is a three-year letterwinner at Strongsville High School. A year ago, she averaged 21. points, 10.0 rebounds and four blocks per game en route to garnering second-team All-Ohio and first-team All-Conference accolades. Along the way, she became the school's all-time leading scorer (1,046 points) and equaling the single-game scoring record with a 36-point effort. Bass was tabbed an honorable mention All-Ohio recipient as a sophomore. As a freshman, the Mustangs advanced to the Regional Final as part of a 16-6 overall record as she captured honorable mention All-League honors. She enters her senior campaign having recorded 1,046 career points, 546 rebounds, 139 blocks and 122 steals.
Jackson on Bass – "Reagan is a very talented and gifted athlete. It was really important for our program to keep this local star home. Reagan is athletic, skilled, has a tremendous IQ and undeniable work ethic. She can really run the floor, has great hands and finishes well in traffic. She can also face the basket and stretch the defense with her shooting ability. Reagan is also a versatile defender which will help her transition well to the college level."
ABBY CARTER
A guard from Geneva, Ohio, Carter is a two-year letterwinner from Eastlake North High School after lettering her freshman campaign at Geneva High School. She has averaged 15.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per contest during her prep career. As a junior, she led the Rangers to a 23-4 overall record winning Western Reserve Conference and district titles en route to a berth in the regional final and garnered honorable mention All-State accolades, as well as first-team All-Conference and second-team All-Great Lakes Regional honors. As a sophomore, Eastlake North posted a 25-2 record advancing to the regional final, while earning conference and district crowns. Carter pulled in first-team All-League, second-team All-Great Lakes Regional and special-mention All-Ohio laurels. As a freshman, she was tabbed a second-team All-Conference selection and was named an honorable mention Great Lakes Regional recipient.
Jackson on Carter – "Abby is another talented and competitive scoring guard, who has great size and length at her position. Abby plays in a great high school program and has been well coached from a young age. It shows with her instincts and feel for the game. Abby plays really hard on both ends of the floor. She can really score at all three levels. We are excited to add another Northeast Ohio player to our roster."
ZAKIA RASHEED
A guard from Avon, Ind., Rasheed is a three-year letterwinner at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, Ind., where she owns career-averages of 14.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals per contest. She garnered Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association All-State and Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Large-School All-State accolades as a junior. A year ago, Rasheed surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her prep career and capped the season with All-Conference and All-City honors. As a sophomore, she was tabbed a first-team All-State award winner, an adidas Gauntlet All-American and was recognized by Hoosier Magazine as an All-State honoree. During her freshman campaign, Rasheed pulled in honorable mention All-State accolades and was named the Most Valuable Player at the Hendricks County Hoop Fest.
Jackson on Rasheed – "I love the way Zakia plays the game. She is a true combo guard who can distribute or get you a bucket when needed. She is a tremendous passer, who sees the floor well. I predict a lot of Rasheed to Bass conversions in our future. Zakia also has a great IQ and demeanor on the court. She is tough and super competitive and can really score the ball in multiple ways. Indiana recruiting has been very good for us, so I am happy to add another Zip from that state to our roster."
