OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.– University of Akron senior Alvin Davis, Jr. (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has been named to the 2019 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List.
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award annually recognizes the best defensive back in college football. The award is based on performance on the field, athletic ability, and character.
The preseason list includes 46 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing 10 conferences and 1 Independent. This list is not final and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses.
The award recipient is selected by the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award National Selection Committee, which boasts members of the NCFAA, an Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in-house award committee, former Paycom Jim Thorpe Award recipients, and sportswriters and college football journalists throughout the country.

A 2019 preseason first-team All-Mid-American Conference by Phil Steele's and Athlon Sports, Davis was the a first-team All-MAC selection in 2018. He is also a member of the 2019 College Football America Yearbook's Group of 5 Starting Line-up, CFAY's version of the Group of 5 All-America Team.
Last fall, Davis started 11 games at safety. The top defensive back (and fourth overall) with 77 tackles, he had a national-best/team-best four interceptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns, three break-ups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Davis returned two interceptions for touchdowns (97 yards and 50 yards), propelling UA to the come-from-behind road victory. Davis' 97-yard interception tied for second-best in program history. He finished the game with 10 tackles, two interceptions for 147 return yards, and two touchdowns en route to Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, Chuck Bednarik National Defensive Player of the Week, MAC Defensive Player of the Week, and Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week honors. Following the season, Davis was named the team's Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Under first-year head coach Tom Arth, Akron returns 51 letterwinners. UA opens the 2019 season at Illinois on August 31. The home opener is slated for Sept. 7 against UAB.

Union streets) during business hours (Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
Group tickets start at $10 each (with a minimum of 15 people).
