TOLEDO, Ohio– The Akron offense put on a show in game one of its doubleheader scoring 11 runs on 13 hits to defeat the Toledo, 11-5, before falling in the second game of the Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Scott Park Softball Complex.Â
Â
Toledo claimed the series victory over Akron as the Rockets took two out of three games against the Zips. UA now stands 8-21-2 overall and 2-9 in league play while UT stands 12-20 overall and 4-4 in conference contests.Â
Â
The Zips bats came alive en route to an 11-5 victory in game one against Toledo. Akron's 13 hits in the contest were the third-most in a game this season by the Zips. UA used a balanced attack at the plate with eight Zips posting a hit in the match-up that included all but one player from the starting lineup.Â
Â
Junior Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) went 3-for-4 from the dish for a team-high in hits for Akron while also scoring a run and driving in an RBI. Redshirt Sophomore Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.) was the top run producer in the Akron lineup and tallied a career-high five RBI against the Rockets going 2-for-3 and scoring three runs. Senior Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) and junior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) rounded out the Zips players with a multi-hit performance each recording a pair of hits along with an RBI from Crews and a run scored by Mitchiner.Â
Â
The group of sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio), redshirt Kimberly Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.), senior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio), and junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio) all notched a hit in the contest, went a combined 5-for-16, drove in three RBI and scored three runs.Â
Â
Inside the circle, freshman Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) picked up her first collegiate win against Toledo and improved to 1-1 on the season in her 12thappearance of the season. After entering the game in the out of the bullpen, Petrof tossed five innings, gave up three runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked a pair.Â
Â
After Toledo opened the game with a 2-0 lead heading into the third inning, the Zips offense unleashed seven unanswered runs over the course of the third (4), fourth (2), and sixth inning (1).Â
Â
In the third inning, the Zips took a 4-2 lead after a two-RBI single by Rodriguez and a two-out two-run single from Crews to centerfield.Â
Â
The offense continued in the ensuing inning when Jascoe extended the Zips lead to 6-2 on one swing of the bat. After Malik led off the inning with a single, Jascoe launched her team-leading seventh home run to left field.Â
Â
Akron added to its lead in the fifth inning, again with two outs, when an infield single by Mitchiner allowed the speedy Holzman to dart home for the score.Â
Â
Toledo cut into the Zips lead, 7-3 with a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Akron gained that run back in their next at-bats courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of Lakins.Â
Â
Now down 8-3, Toledo again countered the Zips offense now scoring two in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the game within three runs, 8-5.Â
Â
The Zips, determined to capture its second victory inside MAC play, grew its lead to 11-5 after a towering three-run blast, again from Jascoe. The contest marked the first multi-home run game of Jascoe's career.Â
Â
After a fight by Toledo, Petrof closed the books on game one to capture the win.Â
Â
Toledo flipped the script in game two after losing to Akron to start the day to come away with a 6-1 win.Â
Â
The Rockets who scored first for the second time in as many games posted a 2-0 advantage after two innings of play.Â
Â
UT extended its lead to 6-0 after 5 innings of play with one run in the fourth and three in the fifth.Â
Â
Akron, who was lights on at the plate in game one, was shut down offensively by Toledo's Erin Hunt and did not record a hit until the sixth inning. The Zips were finally able to string together three straight hits including an RBI single by Mitchiner to cap off the inning.Â
Â
Hunt dialed back in on the rubber in the seventh inning and closed the door on a comeback effort by the Zips.Â
Â
The Akron softball team will conclude its four-game road trip on Wednesday, April 10. The Zips head to Buffalo, N.Y., to close out their three-game series against Buffalo at 2 p.m. Akron and the Bulls split its first two contests in Akron, Ohio on April 2.
