Kent State Earns Wagon Wheel Point With Sweep Against Akron

AKRON, Ohio– In a classic Akron versus Kent State rivalry match-up, the Golden Flashes got the best of the Zips as the Akron softball team fell to Kent State 9-0 and 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at Lee Jackson Field.
The Golden Flashes earned a point in the Wagon Wheel Challenge with the win over the Zips. However, Akron still leads in the overall standings, 5.5-4.5.
The Akron offense was limited to two hits in game one against Kent State. Senior's Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) and Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) each recorded a single in the affair. The Zips also left three base runners on the base path as Crews added a base on balls to her stats.
After Kent State scored the first run in the second inning of the game, the Golden Flashes scored eight runs in fifth which ended the game due to the NCAA run rule.
The Zips were able to manage some offense in game two but it wasn't enough as the Golden Flashes swept the Zips, 6-4.
Kent State controlled the game early scoring six quick runs in the first two innings. The game remained like that until the sixth inning when the Akron offense got rolling.
The Akron offense was accounted for by an RBI single by sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio), a two-RBI double to right center field from Crews, and an RBI double to straightaway cente by sophomore Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.).
Akron threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Golden Flashes shut the door on the Zips.
The Zips and Golden Flashes matched one another in the hit column with eight base knocks in the night cap. Wulf, Crews, and and junior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) each recorded two base hits in the affair while Holdsworth and junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio) tallied one hit.
Sophomore Mikayla Newland (Chillicothe, Ohio) pitched a gem inside the circle after entering the game in the second inning. The sophomore righty held the Golden Flashes scoreless through 5.2 innings, gave up just two hits, and struck out a season-high eight Kent State batters.
Akron returns to the diamond on Tuesday, Aril 22, as the Zips conclude the home portion of their schedule and the non-conference slate against the Robert Morris at Lee Jackson Field.
