MUNCIE, Ind. -- In the first doubleheader of Mid-American Conference play, Ball State's offense ruled the day as the Akron softball team fell to the Cardinals twice, 13-1 and 9-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.Â
The Cardinal's began the day scoring 11 runs in the first inning of the first game against Akron before adding two more runs in the fourth inning en route the contest ending in the fifth due to the NCAA run rule.Â
Akron's lone run of the ballgame came in the second inning for the Zips. Junior Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) doubled to lead off the inning for Akron. Freshman Morgan Cadmus (Tecumseh, Mich.) entered the game as a pinch runner and advanced to third base after junior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) singled through the left side. Akron then attempted a double steal with runners on the corner. As Mitchiner was thrown out at second base, Cadmus scampered home across the plate for the score.Â
Five different Zips tallied one hit in the affair including, Malik, Mitchiner, sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.), and junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio).Â

An early 6-0 advantage for the Cardinals had the Zips playing from behind after three innings of play.Â
Akron chipped away at the lead in the top of the fifth inning and cut the deficit down to five runs. Junior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) was hit by a pitch with one out to give the Zips their first base runner of the inning. Cadmus again was entered to pinch run and moved over to third on an extra-base hit off the bat of Mitchiner. With Zips on the corners following a walk by junior Maddy Clowdus (Eastvale, Calif.), freshman Camryn Michallas (Huntington, W. Va.) drove in Cadmus on an RBI groundout to the pitcher.Â
The Cardinals scored three unanswered runs in the bottom half of the fifth and sixth innings to end the contest after six innings of play with an eight-run advantage.
