CLINTON, S.C. – On day two of the Blue Hose Invitational, the Akron softball team fell to East Tennessee State, 9-2, as the Buccaneers sealed the victory with late offense down the stretch at the PC Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.Â
Â
Akron now stands, 1-1-1, following its third contest of the season, while ETSU improves to 3-0.Â
"Our offense was not as prolific today but Jascoe continues to hit the ball very well and Sam had a very good day. Our game-changing pinch runners kept us in it through 5 with aggressive base running. We are putting to many people on base and need to clean that up immediately," said head coach Julie Jones. "We didn't have the energy we had yesterday and expect more. We will be where we need tomorrow to head home on a high note."
Â
On the day, the Zips knocked out five hits against the Buccaneers, including a team-best 2-for-3 performance by junior Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.). Pitching in for Akron's offensive efforts was redshirt sophomore Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.), freshman Camryn Michallas (Huntington, W. Va.), and senior Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) all tallying one hit in the ballgame.Â
Â
Toeing the rubber inside the circle was sophomore Mikayla Newland (Chillicothe, Ohio) who made her second start in as many days for the Zips. Newland tossed six innings of work, gave up eight hits, six runs, and struck out a pair. Junior Adrian Smith (St. Clairsville, Ohio) made her third appearance for Akron and second in relief. Smith pitched one inning and gave up three runs on three hits.Â
Â
In the bottom of the third inning, Akron scored the first run of the contest by way of a perfectly executed double steal. Following a lead-off double by Malik and a bunt single from Crews, the Zips had runners on the corners. During senior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) at-bat, coach Jones signaled for a double steal to her base runners and Malik swiped home for the score.Â
Â
ETSU did not trail for long as the Buccaneers scored two runs in the next half inning.Â
Â
Now down by one score (2-1), the Zips answered right back in the bottom of the fourth. Jascoe walked in the first at-bat of the inning and senior Sabria Bruton (Palmetto, Fla.) entered the game as a pinch runner. Sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio) laid down a SAC bunt in the next at-bat which moved Bruton to second base and into scoring position. With two outs, Jones chose to be aggressive on the base path and with Bruton stealing third. She then came around the score on an error by ETSU for the Zips second run which tied the game back up at two.Â
Â
That would be all the Zips would manage to score in the final three innings of play while ETSU scored one run in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead and later put the game away scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning.Â
Â
Akron closes out play at the Blue Hose Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 10, as the Zips are scheduled for a rematch against Morgan State (10:30 a.m.) and East Tennessee State (12 p.m.). Â
