MACON, Ga. – The Akron softball team competed in the day two of the Orange and Black Tournament but fell to both Loyola (Chi.) 11-2 and tournament host, Mercer, 9-2 on Saturday in Macon, Ga.

The Akron offense posted a combined eight hits on the day to combine to score four runs. Senior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) led the Zips against the Bears going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while redshirt senior Kimberly Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded a team-high two hits and a scored a run against the Ramblers.

In game one of the day, Loyola scored four runs in the first, one in the second, and three in the fourth and sixth inning to claim the win. Akron posted a pair of runs in the first inning but could not scratch any more against the Ramblers.

The Zips trailed Loyola, 4-0, heading into the bottom half of the first inning. Akron cut the deficit in half in its first at bat on a RBI single by sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio) and a steal home by freshman Morgan Cadmus (XX) on a called double steal by head coach Julie Jones.

Akron then competed against Mercer for the second time in as many days and again came up short.

Lakins launched a home run to centerfield in the top of the second for her first career home run and trimmed the Bears lead to 3-1.

Wulf then followed suit with a solo home run of her own in the fourth inning. The Zips catcher notched her second homer in as many days and third of her career.

The Bears then scored three runs in the fifth inning for an eventual game-winning score of 9-3.

Akron closes out play at the Black and Orange Tournament tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, Feb. 24, at 1:15 p.m. as the Zips take on North Carolina A&T.
