MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- The Akron softball team won its third game in three days and fifth of the season as the Zips downed George Mason, 9-3, in the final day of the Madeira Beach Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Akron improved its record to 5-3-2 after the first ten games of the 2019 campaign while the Patriots fell to 3-5 on the season.

The Zips offense notched nine hits in the ballgame, the second-most hits in a game this season. Seniors Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) and Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) along with junior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) all recorded two hits in the contest going a combined 6-for-10 from the plate including four runs and two RBI off the bat of Lakins.

Inside the circle, freshman Amaya Smith (St. Clairsville, Ohio) picked up her first career victory as a Zip in her fourth appearance of the season. Smith tossed a total of seven innings after entering the game in relief, gave up just one run on three hits and struck out a pair.

After the Patriots claimed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Zips answered right back with a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Redshirt sophomore Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.) lifted a sac fly to center field that scored Mitchiner from third.

George Mason added to its lead, 3-1, with a solo home run in the top of the third inning.

From that point on, Akron took over control of the game and scored eight unanswered runs from the bottom of the third inning on to run away with the victory.

Akron scored two runs in back-to-back innings courtesy of a two-RBI single by Jascoe in the third and RBI's from freshman Camryn Michallas (Huntington, W.Va.) and junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio). Three RBI singles in the fifth inning added four insurance runs for the Zips.

For the second year in a row, the Akron softball team will travel to Mercer, Ga., to take part in the Mercer Tournament hosted by the Mercer Bears. During the three day tournament (Feb. 22-24), the Zips will square off against Indiana, Mercer, Loyola (Chi.), and North Carolina A&T. First pitch for the Zips at the Mercer tournament is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22.
