AKRON, Ohio – The Akron men's golf traveled to Bridgeport, W.Va. for The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational hosted by West Virginia on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8.
The Zips are coming off a fourth-place finish as they opened the Fall season with the Firestone Invitational last week. For the first time in program history an Akron golfer won the Zips annual event as junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden) claimed medalist honors with an 8-under par 208 tournament total (72-66-70). He earned Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week for his efforts.
Sunden looks to lead the squad this week at the two day, 54-hole event at the par-72, 7,308-yard Pete Dye Golf Club. Sunded will be joined by senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), sophomore Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio), sophomore Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and freshman Braden Smith (Sterling, Ohio).
The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational 15-team field includes host No. 25 West Virginia, Akron, Connecticut, Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, George Washington, James Madison, Marshall, Rice, Southern Miss, Towson, Washington State, Youngstown State and Xavier.
On Monday, the tournament is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and continuous play through 36 holes. Akron will start on holes 8-10.
The final round is also scheduled for a shotgun start, beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
