Sunden Leads Zips at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

Hilton Head Island, S.C. – The Akron Zips finished the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate 11th in team scoring (+42) 305-295-306 – 906 while junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden)and sophomore Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) placed 17th and 26th, respectively, on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 24-25, hosted by Francis Marion University.

On the final day of competition at the 15th-annual event held at the Par 72, 6,913-yard Arnold Palmer signature course, Akron maintained its position from the previous two rounds. Collectively, the Zips posted a 306 (+18) team tally.

Sunden climbed 31 spots on the individuals leaderboard to finish tied at 17th overall with a second-best 1-under par final round. On the final day of competition, he carded five birdies and finished the 54-hole event with (+6) 77-74-71 – 222 scores. For the tournament, Sunded posted 32 pars and eight birdies along with 12 bogeys and a double bogey.

Junior Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio) and freshman Braden Smith (Smithville, Ohio) also moved up in the final rankings after the last 18-holes played. Kaleb Smith finished 85th with a (+32) 82-86-80 – 248 ledger, while Braden Smith completed the event tied at 61st with (+16) 78-76-78 – 232 scores.

Bayerl, who was the Zips scoring leader after 36 holes, fell to a 26th-place tie with a 7-over par final effort. He opened the event with a pair of 73 (+1) tallies and recorded a 79 (+7) for a 225 (+9) tournament total.

Senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) also slipped in the final standings, finishing with a (+11) 77-72-78 – 227. He place tied for 39th overall.

Augusta held on to a slight lead to win the team title, claiming the crown by three strokes with a 286-284-308 - 878 (+14). Davidson earned team runner-up honors, 295-286-300 - 881 (+17), while the Wildcats' Alex Ross, 74-64-76 - 214 (-2) , and Brian Garrett, 72-69-73 - 214 (-2), shared medalist honors.

The Zips will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, March 9-10 at the Palmetto Golf Course in Aiken, S.C. for the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina Aiken.
