Bridgeport, W.Va. – The Akron Zips men's golf team posted a 326 (+38) opening round and the 36-hole day was called short because of darkness as senior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) led the Zips at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational hosted by No. 25 West Virginia.
McFarland posted an 80 (+8) opening round score to lead the Zips. Scores for the second round are not official and the field is set to finish the remaining holes with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The final round will begin immediately after.
Sophomore Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) followed for the Zips in scoring with an 81 (+9) ledger, while sophomore Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) and freshman Braden Smith (Sterling, Ohio) posted 82 (+10) and 83 (+11) scores, respectively.
Junior Fabian Sunden (Sweden) rounded out the team scoring with an 85 (+15) effort.
Florida Atlantic (292,+4) finished the first round two strokes ahead of No. 25 West Virginia (294, +6), but the live scoring suggests that the Mountaineers are making a comeback.
There was a three-way stalemate for the individual crown as Nicklaus Chiam (Washington State), Kevin Scherr (Youngstown State) and Alex Maguire (Florida Atlantic) all carded 2-under par 70 scores in the opening frame.
