AKRON, Ohio --Â Anita Brown, one of the most electric guards and prolific scorers in the history of the University of Akron women's basketball program, has transitioned her game from Akron, Ohio, and taken it over 10,000 miles to Australia.
In 2017, Brown signed her first professional basketball contract to play in the South East Australian Basketball League. One year later in 2018, Brown joined the Mandurah Magic of the State Basketball League in the land 'Down Under'.
From the time Brown first stepped on to the University of Akron campus in 2012 as a young freshman, to her final game in an Akron uniform in the 2016 Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Zips success on the court soared to a level of new heights.
Just as she did when joining the Akron program, Brown has taken the State Basketball League by storm in her first season with the Mandurah Magic. In year one with the Magic, Brown has led the league in points per game and because of it her name is in the running for a prestigious award, the Most Valuable Player.
In 26 games, Brown averaged 24.2 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per match, and 2.4 assists per contests, while shooting at a 45-percent clip from the field. On two occasions this past season, Brown poured in a season-best 36 points, grabbed a combined 11 rebounds, and dished out three assists.
The success Brown has had in her second season of professional basketball does not come as a surprise to many after her four year in an Akron uniform and neither does the fact that she is back in a familiar territory, a championship game.
Anita Brown was a member of one of the greatest Akron women's basketball teams to ever don a Zip uniform. In 2013-14, Brown and company hoisted the MAC Tournament championship trophy for the first time in program history.
Four years later, Brown is back in a championship game but in a new uniform with the Mandurah Magic.
While the Mandurah squad has been plagued by injures all season long, there has been one constant component to their success, and her name is Anita Brown. Brown has helped lead the Magic to a championship appearance doing what she does best, step up in big games. Now, Brown hopes to step up big one more time on Friday, Aug. 31 to bring some magic to the Magic and claim the 2018 State Basketball League crown.
