AKRON, Ohio --Â A four-run deficit in the top of the first inning was too much for Akron to overcome in game one of a three-game series against Bowling Green, as the Falcons defeated the Zips, 4-1, at Lee R. Jackson Field on Friday afternoon.Â
Bowling Green hit a grand slam that scored all four of their runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead. After the first inning, the Zips shutdown the Falcons offense limiting them to just six more hits in the final six innings of play.Â
Akron tallied five hits in the contest against Bowling Green. The Zips were held to just two hits through six innings by the Falcons starting pitcher, Meredith Miller. However, Akron was able to make some noise in the bottom of the seventh inning and added three more hits to their total. Senior Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio) led off the inning with a single to centerfield and junior Laura Lakins singled through the left side with one out to put a pair of runners on the base path. After a double-steal by Gambone and Lakins to put them in scoring position, junior Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) smacked a slow hit ground ball to the Falcons shortstop, hustled down the line, and beat out the throw for an RBI infield single. Despite the three hits and one run in the seventh, Bowling Green would hold on to a 4-1 win.Â
After starter freshman Kayla Kmett (San Clemente, Calif.) exited the contest after 0.1 of an inning, senior Kooper Vertz (Dilsboro, Ind.) made her 25th appearance of the season and twirled a gem in relief for the Zips. Vertz tossed 6.1 innings, gave up six hits, no runs, struck out four, and walked just one. The Zips senior forced eight flyouts and six groundball outs.Â
Crews led the Akron offense going 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a pair of singles and an RBI. Gambone, Lakins, and sophomore Madison Carter (Newnan, Ga.) each tallied a hit in the contest.Â
Akron and Bowling Green are back in action on Saturday, April 21, in doubleheader action at Lee R. Jackson Field starting at 1 p.m.
