MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- After day one of the Black and Gold Tournament was canceled for the Akron softball team, the Zips took the field in Montgomery, Ala. for the first time this weekend against Middle Tennessee and Nicholls State and dropped both contests to the Blue Raiders (5-0) and Colonels (6-0), on Saturday.
Â
Akron fell to 0-7 on the season after the pair of losses, while Middle Tennessee improved to 3-4 and Nicholls State is now 3-1.
Â
The Zips were blanked in game one of the day against Middle Tennessee, 5-0.
Â
Akron tallied four hits in the contest, drew one walk, and left four runners on base in the contest. Redshirt freshman Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.) led the Akron offense going 2-for-3, while senior Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio) and junior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) each tallied a base knock.
Â
After two innings of play, the game remained scoreless before the Blue Raiders were able to strike for the first run of the tilt on an RBI single to right field. In Middle Tennessee's next time to the plate, the Blue Raiders again pushed a run across the plate to extend its lead to 2-0.
Â
In the top of the fourth inning, Lakins led off the inning with a double to left field. Redshirt junior Kimberly Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nevada) put down a sacrifice bunt moving Lakins to third, but she would go no farther as the next two Akron players were set down.
Â
Middle Tennessee added three insurance runs to its two-run lead when Kirystin Cuccia hit a three-run home run out to right field.
Â
In Akron's final at-bat of the contests, the Zips again put on a runner on the base path in the top of the seventh inning. Gambone hit a two-out single to right field and stole second base in the next at-bat. However, Gambone would find herself stranded on second as the last out of the game was made.
Â
Inside the circle, freshman Mikayla Newland (Chillicothe, Ohio) made her fourth start of the season for the Zips and gave up eight hits, five runs, struck out three, and walked a pair. The freshman forced seven groundouts and six fly outs on the afternoon.
Â
In game two of the evening, Akron again fell 6-0 in seven innings, this time against Nicholls State.
Â
More information on game two versus Nicholls State to come.
Â
Akron is back in action tomorrow as the Zips conclude the Black and Gold Tournament against Fort Wayne (9:30 a.m.) and host Alabama State (Noon).
