CLEVELAND – Akron captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) claimed the singles title after the final round of play at Cleveland State's Viking Invitational at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Sunday.
The Zips' redshirt senior went 3-0 in singles play at the No. 1 spot during the three-day tourney.
In Sunday's final round, Akron swept five singles matches from host Cleveland State. At No. 1, Geier beat Kateryna Avram in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Sian Payne, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3, junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) disposed of Gaby Schoenberg, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 4, Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) handed Lara Prosenjak a 6-0, 6-3 loss. At No. 5, freshman Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) battled Blanche Lenoan to a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory.
In doubles action against Connecticut, Pedroso and Vasilescu teamed at No. 1 to defeat Luciana Rabines and Jackie Fitz-Randolph, 7-6 (3).
All play was individual. No team scores were kept.
"Today was by far the best day of the tournament for us overall from a results standpoint, but also from a point construction standpoint," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "The last two days we saw marked improvement from everyone who stepped on court."
"Sophia didn't play fully healthy this weekend, but she pushed through and had a strong weekend of singles play. This should really provide some confidence for her as we head into the Midwest Regionals."
Akron will enjoy an 11-day break before travelling to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 18-23.
