Women’s Tennis: Viking Invitational Day 2 Recap

CLEVELAND – The University of Akron women's tennis claimed individual victories on the second day of competition at Cleveland State's Viking Invitational at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Saturday.
All play was individual. No team scores were kept.
At No. 1 singles against Bowling Green, redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) battled Paula Comella to a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (6) victory. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Polina Radeva in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 5, junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) beat Vanesa Pardo, 6-4, 6-0. At No. 7, freshman Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) defeated Laura Silveira, 8-2.
"Today was a much better day overall for the team," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "I saw positive things in doubles that we really focused or discussion on after yesterday, and in singles we came out and played at a more intense level, and were able to take four out of seven matches against a Bowling Green team that handled us pretty easily last year. I'm excited to see how we respond on the final day tomorrow, when I know that everyone is tired and sore. It is a mental battle more than anything at this point."
In doubles action against host Cleveland State, Geier and Vasilescu defeated Kateryna Avram and Sian Payne, 7-6 (4), at No. 1. At No. 3, Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) and Long beat Blanche Lenoan and Lauren Longo, 6-4.
Against Connecticut, Pedroso paired up with Vasilescu at No. 1 to defeat Gillian Perrotta and Julieanne Bou, 6-2. At No. 2, Rosas and Long beat Jackie Fitz-Randolph and Luciana Rabines, 6-1.
Akron concludes action at the Viking Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11:30 a.m. in doubles action with Bowling Green. The remaining tournament schedule is listed below.
