AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 6-1 win over Oakland and a 5-2 victory over Chicago State on Friday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
Akron stands 2-0 overall.
"Today was an extremely challenging day for us both physically and mentally," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Oakland and Chicago State are both teams on the rise, and I knew that we would have to play well to come away with two wins. We haven't worked on doubles much to start the spring season and it showed in how we played in both matches. We will certainly be focusing our efforts in this area moving forward."
In doubles action, Oakland (0-2 overall) claimed the team point. Akron's only win came at No. 2 as redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) swept Alexandra Whall and Amanda Nilsson, 6-0.
In singles action, the Zips won all six matches.
At No. 1, Geier beat Ava Thielman, 6-0, 6-4.
At No. 2, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Darya Maltseva, 6-3, 6-1.
At. No. 3, Uljanov battled Dasha Artamonova for a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory.
At No. 4, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and Samantha Galloway played the longest match as Pedroso pulled out a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8) win.
At. No. 5, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) beat Alexandra Whall in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
At No. 6, senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) defeated Amanda Nilsson, 6-3, 6-1.
"I was pleased with how we responded in singles in the first match, coming out and winning all six first sets, and then closing out the match by winning all six courts," Padgett said. "This showed a strong resilience from our team. In the second match we started slowly again, but managed to put together some solid performances against a Chicago State team that definitely came ready to play!"
Against Chicago State (0-1 overall), the Zips took the doubles points with wins at No. 1 and 2. Geier and Uljanov moved up to No. 1 at defeated Anastasia Goncharova and Diana Borodina, 7-5. At No. 2, Pedoro and Vasilescu beat Katarina Drazic and Kristina Pukhaeva, 6-3.
In singles action, Geier claimed her second win at No. 1 with a 6-1, retired, win over Goncharova.
At No. 2, Vasilescu beat Drazic, 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 4. Echeverry battled Borodina to a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8) victory.
At No. 6, freshman Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio) beat Maria Kuzminskaya in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
"I am very happy with the energy that our freshmen brought today vocally, as this is an area that we have been lacking in the past," Padgett added. "We received phenomenal effort overall today, and we will work through the mistakes we made, both from a playing and coaching standpoint."
Akron travels to Pittsburgh on Sunday, Jan. 20, for a 1 p.m. match at the Oxford Athletic Club.
