AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team hits the road for the first time this spring.
Akron begins its road swing on Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Bonaventure (0-2 overall) at 10 a.m. UA faces Niagara (0-1 overall) at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played at SBU's Fitness Center.
"We are excited to see how we handle a difficult road stretch so early in the season, and we are depending on our seniors to help our younger players through it," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Playing two matches in the same day is never easy, but we have depth which allows us to be more flexible with our line-up. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone get the chance to fight for positioning within our line-up moving forward, and this Friday is another opportunity for our players to do just that."
In series action, Akron leads St. Bonaventure, 11-3, including 7-0 victory at SBU last season. UA also leads Niagara, 4-0, including a 6-1 win last season.
Akron (2-0 overall) opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 6-1 win over Oakland and a 5-2 victory over Chicago State on Jan. 18 at home.
Redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) had a perfect day. The captain went 2-0 in singles at No. 1 singles. In the 6-1 win over Oakland, Geier easily defeated Ava Thielman, 6-0, 6-4. In the 5-2 victory over Chicago State, she defeated Anastasia Goncharova, 6-1, retired. Overall, Geier stands 10-3 in singles action and 2-0 in spring action.
In doubles action, Geier teamed with sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) shut out Oakland's Alexandra Whall and Amanda Nilsson, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles. Moving up to No. 1 against Chicago State, Geier and Uljanov beat Anastasia Goncharova and Diana Borodina, 7-5. After opening weekend, Geier and Uljanov are 2-0 in doubles action.
Senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) also opened with two wins in singles action.
The Zips will play their next eight matches on the road over the next month.
