Women’s Tennis Sweeps St. Bonaventure, Niagara

OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed two road wins on Friday.

Akron (4-0 overall) defeated St. Bonaventure (0-3 overall), 6-1 in morning action. In the afternoon, UA beat Niagara (0-2 overall), 6-1, at SBU's Fitness Center.

Against the Bonnies, the Zips swept all three doubles match to earn the team point. At No. 1, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Penelope Abreu and Andrea Roque, 6-3.

At No. 2, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) and freshman Enya Forgaci (Boca Raton, Fla.) battled Kahlei Reisinger and Emily Stanley to a 7-6 win.

At No. 3, freshmen Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) and Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio) beat out Buse Gunay and Paula Velilla, 6-4.

In singles action, Akron won five matches. At No. 1, Vasilescu beat Abreu in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2, sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) took care of Kahlei Reisinger, 6-3, 7-5. At No. 3, Pedroso beat Roque, 6-2, 6-3.

In her collegiate singles debut, Forgaci defeated Gunay, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 4. At No. 5, Echeverry claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win over Velilla.

In the win over Niagara, Akron took the doubles point with a sweep. At No. 1, Pedroso and Vasilescu earned their second win on the day with a 6-3 defeat of Chhinda Som and Megan Gamble. At No. 2, Forgaci and Long battled Shannon Wong and Andreea Peteu to a 7-6 (1) victory. At No. 3, Echeverry and senior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) defeated Ali Hutchinson and Olga Donchu, 6-1.

In singles action, UA claimed wins in five matches. At No. 1, Pedroso beat Som in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2, Forgaci defeated Peteu, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0. At No. 4, Echeverry captured a 6-0, 6-2 win over Erika Gonzalez. At No. 5, Flores battled Donchuto a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6) win. At No. 6, Long (Akron) beat Megan Gamble, 7-5, 6-3.

Akron continues road action next week, visiting the state of Utah for three matches. The Zips' first stop is Weber State on Jan. 31.
