OGDEN, Utah – The University of Akron women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match with a 4-3 decision at Weber State on Thursday at the Odgen Athletic Club.
The Zips' 5-0 start to the season is their best since the 2013-14 season when they opened with a 7-0 record.
Akron (5-0 overall) dropped the doubles point to Weber State (2-2 overall), falling at No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
The Zips rebounded in singles action, claiming four victories.
"Today was a tough day of tennis for us, but I couldn't be more proud of the overall effort," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We didn't play our best tennis, but we are definitely fighting through to get used to the altitude."
At No. 1, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Caitlin Herb in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 2, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) beat Pei-hsuan Kuo, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 5, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) took care of Morgan Dickason, 6-3, 6-1.
In the longest match, which was the deciding factor on the day, sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) battled Yuuna Ukita to a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory at the No. 3 spot, giving UA the team win. Uljanov was down 3-0 in the third set, then won five straight games to go ahead 5-3. She won the match in the tiebreaker.
"After dropping the doubles point, Luisa, Miruna, and Sophia did a great job of getting us three quick points to keep us in the match mentally. Anna stepped up after losing a tough first set tiebreak and dominated the second set. The third set went back and forth, but Anna found a way to clinch the team match for us."
UA travels to Utah State (1-1 overall) on Friday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. ET) at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club. Live video and live stats will be available for the match.
