LOGAN, Utah – The University of Akron women's tennis team won its sixth consecutive match with a 4-3 victory at Utah State on Friday at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
The Zips' 6-0 start to the season is their best since the 2013-14 season when they opened with a 7-0 record.
Utah State (1-1 overall) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
The Zips Akron (6-0 overall) rebounded in singles action, claiming four victories.
"We once again put ourselves in a hole with our doubles play," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We started off extremely slowly but picked it up late in the doubles, but the hole was simply too deep. That being said, we responded strong in singles on every court. Utah State is an excellent team, and Sean and his staff are phenomenal coaches. Today's match could have gone either way. I'm so proud of the effort each player displayed, now we have to clean up the mental mistakes and which will absolutely lessen the physical mistakes."
At No. 1, redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Hannah Jones in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
At No. 2, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) battled Alexandra Taylor to a 6-1, 6-7, 6-0 victory.
At No. 3, sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) beat Gabrielle Dekkers, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
At No. 5, senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) dropped the first set, 6-7 (10) to Annaliese County, but bounced back to take the next two, 7-5, 6-0, clinching the Zips' victory.
The Zips close out the road trip with a match against Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. ET) at Utah State's Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
