AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team continues road play this week in the state of Utah.
Akron visits Weber State (2-1 overall) on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 11:30 a.m. MT (1:30 p.m. ET) at the Ogden Athletic Club.
UA then travels to Utah State (1-1 overall) on Friday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. ET) at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club. Live video and live stats will be available for the matches.
The Zips close out the road trip with a match against Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. ET) at Utah State's Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
"We are excited about the opportunity to play three extremely strong teams this week in Utah," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Weber State is a team on the rise that already has an impressive win over Boise State this season, and Utah State and Boise State have consistently shown the ability to play at an impressively high level, year in and year out."
"Challenging our team prior to the conference season beginning is an important aspect of how we schedule."
"We know that we have to adjust to the altitude and the different balls that are used when playing at altitude, but that is all part of the maturation process of a player. You have to be able to make the necessary adjustments to improve and to pick up important individual and team wins."
In series action, Akron leads Weber State, 1-0. UA swept WSU, 7-0, on Feb. 21, 2009 at Air Force. The Zips and Utah State are tied in series action at 1-1. Last season UA claimed a 5-2 win over the Aggies in East Lansing, Mich. This is the first meeting between Akron and Boise State.
Akron (4-0 overall) picked up two road wins last weekend with identical 6-1 victories over St. Bonaventure and Niagara.
In singles action, junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) went 2-0. In the win at St. Bonaventure, she claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrea Roque at the No. 3 spot. Moving up to No. 1 in the win over Niagara, Pedroso defeated Chhinda Som in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Overall, Pedroso stands 9-4 in singles action and a perfect 3-0 in spring action.
In doubles action, Pedroso and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) went 2-0 on the week at the No. 1 spot. In the win at St. Bonaventure, the duo defeated Penelope Abreu and Andrea Roque, 6-3. In the victory over Niagara, the duo also claimed a 6-3 win. Pedroso and Vasilescu are 8-3 in doubles action overall and 3-1 this spring.
