AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team opens the spring portion of its schedule at home on Friday, Jan. 17.
The Zips host Oakland at 10 a.m., followed by a match with Chicago State at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
"We are excited to get the spring season started. We have a demanding and challenging schedule ahead of us, but we know that it will help prepare us for the MAC portion of the schedule beginning in March," ninth-year head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Everyone came back ready to go, and the work rate that each player has put in thus far has been pretty strong. Anna has made great strides from the fall to the spring, and we expect great things from her moving forward. We have always known that the ability was there, now she is putting in the necessary work to maximize that ability and it is showing."
Akron travels to Pittsburgh on Sunday, Jan. 20, for a 1 p.m. match at the Oxford Athletic Club.
"All three teams we face this weekend have gotten stronger from last year, and each match presents its own set of difficulties, but if we play at the level we are capable of playing, we know that we can win all three matches," Padgett added. "That being said, we also know that if we do not play at a high level, we will struggle to win any of the matches this weekend. There is such a fine line between a win and a loss anymore, and we have to make sure that we are focused and doing all that we can to positively impact each match we play."
The Zips return redshirt senior captain Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), who won 2017 MAC Player of the Year honors; seniors Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) and Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico); junior captain Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal); and sophomores Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) and Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany).
UA welcomed four newcomers during the fall– freshmen Enya Forgaci (Boca Raton, Fla.), Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.), Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico), and Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio).
In fall action, Geier posted an 8-3 singles mark. She teamed with Uljanov in doubles action for a perfect 3-0 record while finishing 7-3 overall.
Pedroso went 6-4 in singles action, while Rosas started her freshman campaign at 6-4.
