AKRON HEAD COACH JARED EMBICK
Jared Embick, who had previously served as the Zips' associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, officially became the seventh head coach in the history of The University of Akron men's soccer program in December of 2012.
The 2017 campaign marks his fifth year leading the Zips having registered a 71-22-10 (.738) ledger after posting an 13-6-3 record a season ago.
During Embick's time at Akron, the Zips have posted the highest winning percentage in the nation with an overall record of 181-35-26 (.802), including a 53-4-3 (.908) mark in Mid-American Conference play, while securing nine conference tournament titles, 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament and two appearances in an NCAA final.
The Zips came into the 2016 campaign on the heels of the program's fourth appearance in the College Cup in 2015 and boasted seven returning starters and the second-rated recruiting class in the country as heralded by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
The Zips began the season as the preseason No. 1 according to Soccer America before ascending to the consensus No. 1 team after the opening weekend of play. Akron went on to post its 16th consecutive double-digit victory campaign and concluded the year with a 13-6-3 ledger, including a 3-1-1 mark in the MAC. The Zips earned the MAC regular season and tournament titles en route to collecting the program's 31st NCAA Tournament.
The Zips became one of just five Division I programs to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in each of the past 10 seasons with their 31st overall selection.
Akron was led by the play of Adam Najem, who garnered third-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America accolades, respectively, en route to directing the Zips to rank third in the NCAA in goals (45), points (135) and shots per game (16.95), fourth in points per contest (6.14), fifth in assists (45), sixth in assists per game (2.05) and scoring offense (2.05) and eighth in shots on goal per tilt (6.91).
The Zips also found success in the classroom as Akron boasted a team 3.09 grade-point average, while Najem was tabbed a first-team NSCAA Academic All-American for the second straight season.
Led by Pau Belana, Najem and Brad Ruhaak, who were selected as first-team All-MAC men's soccer selections, eight Akron student-athletes garnered All-MAC accolades a year ago. Additionally, Sam Gainford, Nick Hinds, Stuart Holthusen, Jonathan Lewis and Ben Lundt were recognized as second-team selections.
Najem was honored as the MAC Player of the Year, while Lewis was selected as the MAC Freshman of the Year.
In January, 2017, Lewis became the 12th Zip to have his name called during the first round of the MLS SuperDraft with his selection third overall in the MLS SuperDraft by New York City FC. Additionally, Danilo Radjen was selected in the fourth round (No. 36) by the Houston Dynamo.
Due in large part to Embick's recruiting efforts, Akron has identified and secured some of the best prospects in the country – and around the world – with top-five recruiting classes. The Zips' classes of 2012 and 2009 were ranked No. 1 in the country, while the classes of 2016, 2011 and 2010 each received a No. 2 designation.
More importantly, UA's recruits have flourished in the Zips' system, which features a style of play that is attractive and attack-oriented, yet effective on both sides of the ball. In total, Embick recruited or helped develop 31 players who have gone on to play professionally either in MLS or overseas since 2007.
Prior to joining the Zips, Embick spent four seasons (2003-06) as the head men's soccer coach at Missouri Baptist University where he led the Spartans to a record of 47-21-8 and the program's first NAIA regional tournament berth in 2003. In all, Embick spent six seasons at MBU, including two seasons as a graduate assistant (2000-01) and one season as an assistant coach (2002).
A 2000 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan, Embick was named an All-American by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) in 1998 and 1999 as a player. He was also an NAIA honorable mention All-America honoree in 1999 and was twice named to the All-Mid-Central Conference squad.

Anyone who watched the Zips storm into the College Cup in 2015 with a beautifully possession-oriented style usually rejected by the college game's speed could see the genius at work here. He's as tactically clued in as any coach yet to reach 40 in American history.

WHAT IS A ZIP?
• One of the unique nicknames in collegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron.
• Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth "Red" Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for the University's athletics teams.
• Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos, and Cheveliers.
• The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers, a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company.
• The evolution of Zippy, UA's mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot.
• "Zippy" the kangaroo was officially declared the school's mascot on May 1, 1953. The first known printed reference to the mascot as "Zippy" was a 1965 Zip football press brochure. The Buchtelite's first use of the name "Zippy" came Sept. 24, 1965, in an identification of a photo of the cheerleaders listing "Mascot - 'Zippy' - Charles Huettner."
• In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Twelve Zips have had their names called during the first round of the MLS SuperDraft, including a league record five selections in the first eight picks in 2011 following the Zips' national championship season.
• Akron broke a second MLS record that day as seven Akron players were chosen in the first two rounds, the most from a single team in draft history.
• Zippy is just one of five female-gendered college mascots in Division I athletics. Do you know the other four? (YoUDee, the Delaware Blue Hen; Mrs. Wuf of N.C. State; Lucy Lobo of New Mexico; and Wilma Wildcat of Arizona).

Pittsburgh: Jay Vidovich is in his second season as head coach of the Pittsburgh program, owning a 10-20-3 (.348) record, while maintaining a 282-141-53 (.567) mark in 23 seasons overall as a head coach.
Akron: In his fifth year on the Akron sidelines as head coach, and 11th season overall, is Jared Embick, who owns a 71-22-10 mark (.738), including 118-43-18 (.709) overall, in his seventh year as a head coach.
GOLDEN GOAL PROPELS ZIPS TO 2-1 OVERTIME WIN OVER BOWLING GREEN
In a wild and crazy Mid-American Conference men's soccer showdown, a golden goal by redshirt junior Ezana Kahsay (Asmeras, Eritrea) in the 91st minute (90:26) lifted 13th-ranked Akron to a 2-1 overtime triumph past Bowling Green on Saturday, Oct. 21, at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
The contest featured a wild finish as the final three minutes of play, including overtime, were highlighted by a goal for each side along with a trio of cards being issued, including a pair of red cards against the Falcons.
Kahsay netted the game-winning tally only 26 seconds into overtime off a pair of strong passes into the box from seniors Sam Gainford (Liverpool, England) and Nate Shultz (Mayfield, Ohio). The goal was the second of the season for Kahsay and marked the third game-winning effort of his career.
Bowling Green played the final 2:24 of regulation and overtime two men down after the Falcons were whistled for a pair of red cards resulting from a hard foul near the top of the box on freshman Joao Moutinho (Lisbon, Portugal) in the 88th minute (87:36).
Despite playing a pair of men down, the Falcons garnered the equalizer at the 88:05 mark when a defensive miscue allowed Charlie Maciejwski to collect his second goal of the season off an assist from Alexis Souahy.
The Zips finished the evening registering a 21-7 advantage in shots, including an 11-2 edge on shots on goal.
Moutinho directed Akron's offensive attack with a game-high six shots, while contributing four shots apiece in reserve action was sophomore Nick Hinds (Plantation, Fla.) and Gainford. Bowling Green was led by three strikes from Ebenezer Ackon.
Falcons' goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia was impressive in net for Bowling Green pulling in a game-high eight saves, including five in the second half. Redshirt freshman Tor Saunders (Seattle, Wash.) made one stop in net for the Zips.
The first half proved to be a defensive battle as neither side was able to find the back of the net, despite Akron owning an 8-3 margin in shots.
Redshirt junior Joe Korb (Willowick, Ohio) nearly gave the Zips an early 1-0 lead in the 28th minute (27:38) as only a clearance off the line by Ackon for a team save prevented the shot from finding the back of the net.
The Zips came out attacking to open the second half as Akron recorded six of the first seven shots on the stanza, including a trio of shots on frame by Gainford, all of which were thwarted by Mwembia saves.
The Zips finally capitalized on opportunity in the 78th minute (77:37), when a pair of quick and compact passes from senior Manuel Cordeiro (Porto, Portugal) and Gainford resulted in the fourth goal of the season for Hinds, a strike from the middle of the box which found the corner of the net.
NO. 13 AKRON EDGES NO. 8 NOTRE DAME, 2-0
The 13th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team added another signature win to its resume on Oct. 17, as the Zips registered a 2-0 triumph past eighth-ranked Notre Dame at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.

Sam Gainford and Nick Hinds accounted for Akron's offensive production in the affair to lead the Zips to their seventh home victory of the season.
The Fighting Irish began the evening on the attack and registered the first shot on goal only 36 seconds into the affair, a strike by Thomas Ueland that was punched out for a save by goalkeeper Tor Saunders.
Senior Pau Belana (Barcelona, Spain) collected a shot on frame for Akron in the fifth minute (4:57), one that was pulled in for a stop by Notre Dame' goalkeeper Chris Hubbard.
Saunders again recorded the save off a strike by Jon Gallagher at the 17:55 mark to keep the contest scoreless.
Marcel Zajac (Mississauga, Ontario) nearly gave the Zips the first goal of the evening with a side-winding shot from the middle of the box in the 25th minute (24:30) that went just high of net.
Ezana Kahsay was able to draw a foul in the box on the Fighting Irish in the 35th minute (34:59) to set up a penalty kick for Akron. Stepping to the line a delivering his team-leading fifth goal of the season was Gainford, who had entered the contest at the 29:38 mark.
The Zips closed the half owning a 5-2 advantage in shots, with each side posting a pair of shots on goal, and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Blake Townes nearly netted the equalizer for Notre Dame in the 55th minute (54:34) as his strike from the top of the box was stopped with a save from Saunders.
Senior Stuart Holthusen (Auckland, New Zealand) had his shot at the 76:36 mark go just wide corner of the net before getting a 1v1 opportunity in the 79th minute (78:10) that appeared destined for another penalty shot, but the call of a foul in the box was not awarded on the play.
Junior Morgan Hackworth (Bradenton, Fla.) and Holthusen belted shots on goal in the 84th (83:23) and 85th (84:53) minutes, respectively, for Akron that were again denied by saves from Hubbard.
Holthusen continued to work offensively and was able to draw a foul just inside the box at the 87:38 mark that resulted in another penalty kick opportunity for the Zips.
Gainford stepped to the line and delivered a ball that Hubbard deflected for a save. Knocking in the deflection for his third goal of the season was Hinds, with Gainford earning the assist on the tally.
Sparked by an 8-4 margin in second-half shots, including 4-2 on goal, the Zips finished the evening outshooting the Fighting Irish, 13-6.
