AKRON, Ohio - The Akron women's basketball team is set to entertain Toledo on Saturday, Feb. 14, in a contest at the James A. Rhodes Arena that will serve as the Zips' Play4Kay game in honor of the late North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who lost her long battle with breast cancer in 2009.
The game will help raise awareness for the disease and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which supports research, provides grants, and drives inspiration in the fight against women's cancers.
The Zips will wear pink jerseys and socks to help honor the legacy of one of the true pioneers in the game of women's basketball.
Additionally, every member of the Akron squad, including the coaching and support staffs have been challenged by head coach Jodi Kest to dedicate their efforts in the game in the memory of someone in their lives who has been affected by breast cancer.
A signed pink basketball from the entire Akron women's basketball team along with a pair of pink jerseys signed by the squad, will be raffled off.
Additionally, blue t-shirts with a pink graphic design will be sold for $5 at the game with proceeds being donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
