AKRON, Ohio – Dressed in shoulder pads and shorts, the Zips football team held its third practice of training camp on Monday morning.
"You always feel the excitement level go up a notch when the players put on shoulder pads," second-year head coach Terry Bowden said. "We are a few days away from putting on full pads, which means we are getting that much closer to playing actual football."
The squad has two more morning practices, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday, before putting on full pads for the first time on Thursday morning. Thursday will also be the team's first two-a-day practice schedule.
Zips Notebook: The program's 105-man roster has almost taken full form ... one of the few remaining spots is expected to be filled by junior LB C.J. Mizell ... Mizell, who signed with the Zips in February, is working to complete his associate's degree at Tallahassee Community College ... much of the attention in practice is being spent on skill development and installation of the playbook ... as the coaching staff attempts to set a depth chart, players have been mixed between the first and second strings at their respective position ... the program's second-annual Kickoff Luncheon will be held on Friday, Aug. 23 at noon at Quaker Station in downtown Akron ... seats, reserved tables of eight and sponsorship opportunities for the event are still available and can be purchased by calling the Athletics Ticket office at 1-888-99-AKRON (25766).
The season gets underway at UCF on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN3. UA's home opener is against James Madison on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
