Rifle Wins Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship in Small-Bore

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 17 University of Akron rifle squad traveled to the Ohio State University on Friday to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) and Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference (WIRC) championships. Akron earned the MAC small-bore championships for the second year in a row.
Akron and Navy had been going toe-to-toe for the entire season for the MAC championship title. UA narrowly defeated Navy by four points in the championship. Navy posted a score of 2275 out of a possible 2300 points, while Akron scored 2279 points out of 2300.
UA also came in second in the WIRC championship. Ohio State came in first for the WIRC, while Morehead State came in third. Akron totaled a score of 1548 points for air rifle and 2279 points for small-bore.
The Akron rifle squad earned several individual awards from the WIRC. First team All-Conference small-bore honorees from UA were freshmen Alan Agnew and Tim Hopkins. Small-bore second team All-Conference for the WIRC from Akron was John Hupp, Crystal Reynolds and Andrew Besch.
Akron rifle earned two individual awards for air rifle in the WIRC. Victoria Brown earned first-team, while Agnew earned second-team. Agnew was one of four sharpshooters to earn an individual award for both small-bore and air rifle.
Agnew has also earned an automatic invite to the National Junior Olympic Rifle Championships in April, which is hosted by U.S.A. Shooting at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team is still awaiting word on other members earning invites. The MAC will announce All-Conference, All-Academic, and All-Rookie awards soon.
