AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's basketball team made quick work of Hiram in its home opener Saturday afternoon, shooting 43.7 percent from the field en route to an 83-24 victory.
Sina King poured in a game-high 15 points in just 16 minutes of action, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe to set the tone for the Zips.
Rachel Tecca was solid offensively as well, picking up 13 points in 12 minutes. Tecca needs just eight more points to reach 1,000 for her career.
Akron's defense held Hiram scoreless for almost half of the first half, as the Terriers did not knock down their first bucket until the 11:36 mark. UA's 23-0 run to open the game was broken up by a 3-pointer from Hiram's Calysia Smyers.
Katie Bubna hit a jumper from the free throw line with just over a minute to play in the first half to push Akron's lead to 42-7, and the Terriers answered with a 12-footer and a buzzer-beating layup to make it 42-11 at the break.
King and Tecca combined to give the Zips a quick 10-4 run to start the second half, maintaining an advantage UA would slowly build on for the remainder of the game.
Hiram was led by Christy Griffin's eight points.
Although the Zips received quality minutes from their starting five they also benefitted from 39 bench points in the contest. The pack of newcomers was led by freshman Katie Nunan with eight points and nine rebounds in her collegiate debut. Local product Cari Guyton provided eight points and five rebounds and DiAndra Gibson added nine points and four boards.
As a team, Akron out-rebounded Hiram 64-35, and forced the Terriers into 31 turnovers.
UA will take to the road for its first test away from home on Tuesday, Nov. 13 when the Zips travel to Tennessee Tech. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET in Cookeville.
