Women's Basketball Gets Clipped by Northern Illinois

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's basketball team gave up a 72-66 decision to Northern Illinois in cross-divisional Mid-American Conference action on Wednesday night at Rhodes Arena.
Carly Young led three Akron (9-12, 3-4 MAC) players in double-figures with a career-high 20 points. The sophomore forward went 6-for-11 from the field and also had a game-high-tying seven rebounds in 31 minutes.
Jasmine Mushington and Ti'eshia Stubbs rounded out the Zips' double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Claire Jakubicek's 18 points led Northern Illinois (7-11, 1-5 MAC), while Kim Davis had seven boards for the Huskies.
NIU took a 58-56 lead with 3:30 to play, thanks to a pair of foul shots from Jakubicek, and maintained control from that point.
The Huskies, who went 26-of-30 from the line (86.7 percent) in the game, converted 9-of-10 free throws to close out the contest.
UA built its first-half lead to as much as 14 points (21-7) with 11:42 remaining, but NIU was able to close the margin to 29-27 by the intermission and neither squad led by more that five points until the final minute.
The Zips ended the game shooting 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor and 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the line, while the Huskies went 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field.
Northern Illinois won the battle of the glass 44-31 and overcame 20 turnovers, compared to 18 by Akron.
The Zips continue cross-divisional league play on Saturday at Eastern Michigan. Game time is set for 2 p.m. ET.
Zips Notebook: Tonight's game was tied four times and featured nine lead changes ... Carly Young's previous career high in points was 17 at Georgia Southern on Nov. 26, 2010. Twice this season she had scored 16 points, with the most recent coming at Buffalo on Jan. 11 ... The Zips' next two outings are on the road, which closes out a stretch in which they played six of eight away from Rhodes Arena.
