Zippy's Top 10 Countdown: No. 5
July 18 | Women's Basketball
Hey Akron fans, Zippy here!
As I continue my countdown, women's basketball player Kara Murphy comes in at No. 5 after becoming the Zips all-time leading scorer during her senior campaign, capping one of the best careers in program history.
In almost storybook fashion, Murphy surpassed Akron great Cheryl Bowles with two crucial free throws in the final minutes of a game at Buffalo (Feb. 16) that helped give the Zips a gritty road victory, 71-67. She finished her career with an impressive 1,777 total points, giving her an average of 14.4 points per game, the third-best mark in program history.
Equally as amazing, Murphy also broke the record for career games played (123), as she never missed a start in the blue & gold. During her time as a Zip, she also set the season record for points (580) and career records for field goals attempted (1,446), free throws made (480) and free throw attempts (635).
At the end of the 2010-11 season, Murphy earned All-MAC Honorable Mention honors, joining Bowles as the only Zips to make the All-MAC squad all four years of their career.
She will be missed next season, but her impact will not soon be forgotten. Congratulations to Kara on a tremendous career!
Check back tomorrow for No. 4 in my countdown!
