Women's Basketball Cruises Over Ohio Dominican 97-43

AKRON, Ohio – To open the 2011-12 season, The University of Akron women's basketball team took care of Ohio Dominican 97-43 in the team's only exhibition contest. The Zips had six players score in double figures, and junior Rachel Tecca turned in a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Hanna Luburgh led all scorers with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting, including 4-for-5 from 3-point land.
Sina King and Taylor Ruper each totaled 11 points, while Jasmine Mushington and Brittani Thomas both notched 10 points. Thomas, a freshman from Columbus, Ohio, was 4-for-6 from the floor, while King was 3-for-4 with six boards and a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe. Senior guard Natasha Williams had a game-high six assists and four steals.
As a team, the Zips shot 50.0 percent overall and 34.8 percent from distance while holding the Panthers to 32.7 percent shooting. Akron won the battle underneath, as well, with 47 rebounds to ODU's 30. At the half, UA led 50-26 and did not relent in the second period, holding the Panthers to just 17 points while scoring 47.
The Zips kick off the regular season at No. 2 Notre Dame as part of the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 11. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
