Snowden Sets School Record in Defeat at Ball State
February 09 | Women's Basketball
(Hartville, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) scored a game-high 22
points and Keyla Snowden (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic)
broke the school record for most three-point field goals in single
season but it wasn't enough to rally the University of Akron
women's basketball team in an 80-64 defeat to Ball State Saturday
afternoon at John E. Worthen Arena.
The loss snapped a modest two-game streak for the Zips, who fell to
7-16 overall and 2-7 in Mid-American Conference play. Ball State
improved to 10-12, 6-3.
Snowden, who entered play tied for the school's mark, hit
back-to-back triples midway through the second half for her 64th
and 65th of the year to break away from the previous record of 63,
originally set by Michelle Chavanne during the 1996-97 campaign.
Snowden finished with 19 points.
Riana Miller (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) joined
Murphy and Snowden in double figures with 10 points and four
blocks.
UA, which trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half, cut
the deficit to five, 65-60, with 3:20 to play thanks to a 14-4 run.
The Zips' late rally was sparked by consecutive threes from Victoria Arndt (Beloit, Ohio/ West Branch), who
recorded a season-best nine points, and Murphy and was capped off
by a pair of free throws from Ashley
Veal (Wadsworth, Ohio/ Wadsworth).
But BSU's Porchia Green converted a three-point play and Audrey
McDonald hit two straight threes to stretch the Cardinals' lead
back to 14 and the Zips were unable to recover.
"I thought the team worked really hard, being down by 20 points in
the second half and cutting it to five," said UA head coach Jodi
Kest. "But we struggled with our transition defense and our
rebounding and it cost us today."
Ball State out-shot Akron, .536 (39-for-56) to .377 (10-for-30),
and won the battle of the boards, 47-20.
The Zips found themselves in a hole early after BSU used a 14-0 run
to build a 21-6 advantage at the 10:57 mark in the first half. UA
scored the next three baskets to cut the lead to nine, 21-12, but
couldn't get any closer. Akron trailed 41-22 at the
intermission.
BSU connected on 52.9 percent (18-for-34) of their shots in the
opening period, while the Zips shot just 33.3 percent
(10-for-30).
Akron will next head to Ypsilanti, Mich. for a Tuesday night
match-up versus Eastern Michigan. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
EST.
Zips Notebook: Miller has recorded 67 blocks in 50 career
games at UA ... she trails seventh place (71) on the school's
all-time blocks list by just four ... Murphy led UA in scoring for
the sixth time this year ... it was also her team-leading 18th
double-digit game ... Akron shot 1-for-8 from 3-point range in the
first half and 4-for-8 in the second ... the Zips forced 22 BSU
turnovers while committing just 12.
